SBTi has officially validated Burgo Group’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets
SBTi – Science Based Target initiative – has recently validated Burgo Group’s emission reduction targets, reaffirming the company’s commitment to mitigating its impact on climate change.
This recognition is particularly significant for the Group, as it confirms that the submitted reduction targets are fully compliant with the criteria set by SBTi.
These criteria are considered science-based because they align with the latest climate research, defining the actions required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement adopted on 12 December 2015. Chief among these is the aim to limit global temperature increases to below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, or at least to keep them within 2°C.
SBTi recognises the 1.5 °C target pursued by Burgo Group as “the most ambitious designation currently available through the SBTi process”.
Burgo Group’s target
In line with the decarbonisation targets outlined in the ESG GO 2030 strategy, Burgo Group is committed to reducing its absolute greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) by 42% by 2030, compared to 2021 (set as baseline year).
Moreover, the Group aims to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by 25%. These emissions stem from purchased goods and services, as well as all activities related to fuel and energy procurement and use, and waste generated during various operations.
Reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving energy efficiency are key steps to fight climate change and, in the long term, reduce operating costs while maintaining market competitiveness.

SBTi is an initiative led by a non-profit that helps companies and financial institutions worldwide improve their contribution to avoid the climate change.
This goal is pursued through the development of standards, tools and guidelines that enable companies to set concrete targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the Paris Agreement and aiming to achieve the Net Zero Target by 2050.
SBTi, whose partners include CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business coalition, WRI and WWF, has seen a growing number of companies joining over the years. According to the latest report, by the end of 2023, more than 4,200 companies were participating, a 102% increase compared to the previous year.
